Need Experience? 3 Tips To Get Your Dream Internship

You have worked your way through college, or perhaps you are still working your way through college. Either way, while you may have the education in your field of study, often, students are lacking experience. The best way to get experience while in college or just after graduation is by landing an amazing internship. What many people fail to realize, is that an internship has more benefits than just experience. With an internship, you will obtain knowledge, networking opportunities, exposure in your field and a chance to really shine. Don’t take an internship opportunity for granted. Here are 3 tips to help you land your dream internship.

  1. It’s all about first impressions: A resume is your first contact with any company.       It is of the greatest importance that your resume be absolutely flawless. Look over it multiple times and have multiple people look over it as well. You do not want a recruiter to pass you by for an opportunity because you did not take the time to use your computer’s spell check.
  2. Seal the Deal:  When you land an interview, this is your opportunity to shine. Make sure you stand out from other applicants by doing your research on the company and its practices and policies. Take time to fully understand what the company does- even if it doesn’t affect the job you will be performing. Once you are in the interview, find opportunities to tie in their company policies and practices or values into your answers.       This will show the interviewer that you have taken the time to fully understand the company. Also, when you are asked if you have any questions, ask! Even if you do not have any questions specific to the interview, try asking the interviewer what they like most about working for the company, or how long they have worked with them. This is your only opportunity to show them that you are committed to the opportunity. This will make you stick out in their minds.
  3. Being Hungry is a Good Thing:  Follow up on your interview, either by phone or email. Don’t just call to check the status of your application. Call within 24 hours of your interview, and simply thank them for taking the time to interview you, thank them for the opportunity and leave your contact information in case they need anything else from you. Send the interviewer a thank you note. This shows the interviewer that you not only have manners, but that you are genuinely interested in the opportunity, and this allows them to reflect more on how you may fit in with their company.

Landing your dream internship can be a stressful and time consuming process. However, if you follow these 3 tips and present the best version of yourself, that internship will not be far off!
