Preparing For Math Courses At Your University

Some of the hardest classes you’ll have to take at your university will be related to math. The reason for this has nothing to do with your math skills. Even if you’re a math person and scored well on the SAT, you may find yourself struggling in a college course.

Math courses, like learning a language, are cumulative. You can’t forget algebra and succeed in geometry. The material builds on itself.

Some students try to take calculus years after they took pre-calc. Then when they feel overwhelmed in the middle of the semester, it usually has nothing to do with calculus. They’ve just forgotten all the material in the prerequisite courses.

Now, if you’re in this position right now or are thinking about taking another math course soon, don’t worry. There are lots of free tools online to which you can refer. Here are some of the best ones to begin your preparations. Again there so many out there keep looking until you find what’s right for you.

Khan Academy

Extremely thorough and designed for visual learners, the Khan Academy is great for people who want to simulate the in-class experience. They have everything from Algebra to Microeconomics and have saved many students from their math problems.

Purple Math

Purple Math doesn’t cover quite as many topics as the Khan Academy, but it’s just as effective. The main difference is that they present the material as simply as possible, so if you don’t want to watch a 10 minute video and just need to look at a problem quickly, Purple Math is for you.

WebMath

WebMath is similar to Purple Math but presents the material a bit differently. The website has a great online community if you’re looking for one-on-one help.

With all the resources at your disposal online, preparing yourself for an upper-level math course is easy. The important thing is that you take your time and start reviewing the concepts sooner rather than later.
