The search for college internships isn’t what it used to be. For one, students are expected to be proactive in their search for unpaid internships. Companies aren’t going to come looking for you, since they receive hundreds of applications from eager students willing to work for free.
When you work as an intern, there’s a decent chance that you might not end up liking your job. And that’s just fine. Part of the internship experience is finding out if you really want to turn a job into a career.
There’s a reason why so many students change their major. Some even do it a few times. It’s difficult to pick a subject and dedicate your life to it. Sometimes students discover that they don’t want to continue down that road when they take certain classes. It’s also possible to like college classes but not be satisfied with a real job in that field.
Many things can drive an internship search, too often however, students either don’t know what to look for or look for the wrong things. Here are a few suggestions that can help you make the most of your internship search and, of course, subsequently your internship.
We all know that having a Bachelor’s degree doesn’t mean as much as it used to. Of course, it’s not that the quality of a Bachelor’s degree has gone down, but rather, it’s that almost everyone is getting a Bachelor’s degree after finishing high school. It’s not so much of a difference maker as it is a requirement on a resume.
You have worked your way through college, or perhaps you are still working your way through college. Either way, while you may have the education in your field of study, often, students are lacking experience. The best way to get experience while in college or just after graduation is by landing an amazing internship. What many people fail to realize, is that an internship has more benefits than just experience.
In general, college students are pretty poor. Living off of the least expensive noodle dishes, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and the occasional pizza is not uncommon. Because of that, when you are looking for an internship, it might be tempting to turn down an unpaid one in hopes of getting a paid internship offer. Before deciding against an unpaid internship, remember there are things to be gained even if you are unpaid.
